Doers of the Word, Not the Hearers Only – James 1:22-25

August 18, 2021

Words can be very powerful, but it is much more powerful when they are assisted with actions. Words that are not complemented by action, are dead. There’s a saying that “actions speak louder than words”, I agree. Don’t let anyone mislead you, why do you call Him Lord, Lord, but not do what He says? where is His honor? haven’t you heard;
“Not every one that said to Him, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of His Father which is in heaven.” It is not the hearers of the Words of God who are called righteous, but it is the doers of His Words. James 1:22- 25 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

But he who investigates the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” We are called and have been given the grace to follow the example of Christ, for He came down heaven to be a doer of the Words of His Father. To be very clear, we are not saved by works but by grace through faith, it is the gift of God, and we can’t take credit for it. Nevertheless, our actions should establish clear evidence of our redemption in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast.

If we have truly come to the knowledge of truth and believe to be a faithful disciple of Christ; let us put away our past way of life, our old self, which is being ruined by its lying longing. Now, let us not talk as others do, but let us prepare our minds with truth ready for action, knowing that the righteous shall eat the fruit of their actions. Matthew  16:27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
